College costs continue to race higher

According to data released this week by the College Board, private university tuition rose another 5.9% in 2005, continuing the trend of prices increases exceeding the rate of inflation. Public university tuition increases "slowed" to 7.1% in 2005 from from their 10.5% pace in 2004. Average private university tuition now runs $21,000, with room and board bringing that total to $29,000. The total cost of the average year at a public university is now $12,000. Costs are highest on the Eastern Seaboard and lowest in the South and Southwest. At the top private universities, total costs of attendance are approaching $40,000 per year.
